THE CONJURING FRANCHISE

THE CONJURING FRANCHISE - The Nun, 5th film in the Conjuring franchise, features a screenplay by Gary Dauberman from a Wan/ Dauberman treatment based on source material. You will certainly recognize the name James Wan, creator of the Insidious and Saw franchises. So far this series has included The Conjuring (2013), Anabelle (2014), Annabelle: Creation (2017), The Conjuring: Enfield Case (2016) and The Nun (2018). The Crooked Man, another spinoff character tracing back to source material is currently in production.  Starring as the nun will be Taissa Farmiga, sister of the original Conjuring star Vera Farmiga. Catch the film in theaters on September 7, 2018.

HEREDITARY

HEREDITARY - This 2018 supernatural horror film was written/ directed by Ari Aster in his directorial debut. Hereditary follows a family grieving the loss of their secretive grandmother. Starring Toni Collette as a mom and miniaturist, she lives and creates at home with her family. Alex Wolff plays her son. Dark forces exact their due when a gruesome incident occurs between the brother/ sister, played by breakout star Milly Shapiro. I make it a point never to find out anything about new horror films before watching, to immerse myself in the experience. There were so many Easter eggs, it felt dissatisfying since I knew I was missing a lot of them, upon first viewing. But with so much artistry and enjoyability, I’m sure to watch again soon. A24 has released The Witch, It Comes at Night, The Monster, Blackcoat’s Daughter, A Ghost Story and Hereditary. It’s great to see a studio producing so much new horror. I certainly won’t miss the next A24 feature! And you shouldn’t either!

THE CANTERVILLE GHOST SHORT STORY REVIEW

THE CANTERVILLE GHOST SHORT STORY REVIEW - In Oscar Wilde’s first published story, the ghost of an English lord from the distant past, tries and fails to frighten an American family, residing in his former mansion. The Canterville Ghost is a study in opposites, chock full of humorous quips and witty banter, quite unlike The Picture of Dorian Gray, more in the vein of The Importance of Being Earnest. There are shaking chains, bleached bones, creaking floorboards and a parade of disguises. But the ghost is frustrated by his attempt at frightening residents because they find him comical and not scary.  While old fashioned, his other works include stage plays, and endless stream of witty quotes, which are a window into the mind of one of the greats of English literature. Do you like classic horror? Then do yourself a favor and read The Canterville Ghost!

THE LADY'S MAID'S BELL

The Lady's Maid's Bell - A new maid is employed by an invalid in a gloomy Hudson Valley mansion. As she gets to know the house staff, she is bothered by several odd circumstances. She is replacing the position of a former maid that was recently deceased. Several other attempted replacements didn’t stay in the gloomy mansion for longer than a few days. Further foreshadowing reveals an odd locked room and her employer’s insistence to refrain from ringing the maid’s bell.

THE WITCH

THE WITCH - While watching her infant brother, a farmer’s daughter finds herself amidst the unfortunate circumstance of his disappearance, during a game of peekaboo. Meanwhile, her middle brother and sister play a game, imagining their goat (Black Phillip) speaks to them as the embodiment of Satan. The story is set on a farm which perches on the edge of a forest in New England in 1630. It’s a coming of age tale, superimposed against Puritan submission to God, and unremitting fear of the Devil. Written and directed by Robert Eggers, The Witch is purported to be very close to its source material, taken from seventeenth century New England texts. The director’s debut film has been applauded on the film festival circuit and widely praised by critics. My recommendation on the movie is mixed. The mood setting was fantastic, the lead actress was compelling, and thematically it was interesting. But what I want in a horror movie is scares, and for me, there were missed opportunities. I won’t ruin the ending-- but all the bumps in the night were packed into the last ten minutes -- the pacing was off. There are long stretches --of talking, talking, talking --in hushed ‘actory’ accents inside a dark shack with a dirt floor. Artsy? Yes, if not a bit hard to follow. But as Eggers first horror film, it shows great promise, so I’m looking forward to the release of The Knight and Nosferatu.

WINCHESTER MYSTERY HOUSE

WINCHESTER MYSTERY HOUSE - Sarah Winchester left behind a seven story mansion known as the Winchester Mystery House.  It’s now in the middle of San Jose, what was once Santa Clara valley orchard farmland.  In 1884 she began with a nearly unlimited renovation budget paid for by the several millions left behind by her late husband.  William Winchester was the heir to the estate of the famous Winchester repeating rifle.  Based on the consultation of a spiritualist, Sarah lived in the midst of nearly forty years of construction.  In her community she endured public scrutiny, engaged in bizarre behavior and believed in occult reasons for her bad luck.  She was convinced her torment was caused by the influence of spirits of the dead; due to their deaths caused by Winchester’s rifles.  The pictures and description don’t do the house justice, the scale is overwhelming and the house is something to see firsthand.  It’s the ultimate Halloween haunted house!
