WRITING REFERENCE #5

WRITING REFERENCE #5 - This post is part of a series devoted to writing reference. For what it’s worth, this article poses ‘questions’ about short stories then provides ‘answers’. For many, entering a short story contest or seeking publication in an online magazine, are great ways to gain exposure. Don’t have the time to write a novel? Write a short story instead and use that as a publication credit! Even if you decide to self-publish (as opposed to going the mag or contest route) start somewhere, there’s no excuse to not get your name out there, if you call yourself a writer.  As a reminder, I have listed all of the posts in this category, see below.

BAY BRIDGE LIGHT SHOW

BAY BRIDGE LIGHT SHOW – To many, the Bay Bridge is the lesser known and less glamorous sibling, of the Golden Gate Bridge. Watch today’s post, which includes a vid clip of a LED light show, marking the bridge’s 75th anniversary. The light display amplifies the upcoming America's Cup as well as the opening of the new Eastern span.

SHORT STORY REVIEW THE EVOLUTION OF KNOWLEDGE SHORT STORY REVIEW

SHORT STORY REVIEW THE EVOLUTION OF KNOWLEDGE SHORT STORY REVIEW - In New York, two foreign men (Italian and German) share either side of a wall, living in an apartment building, with their families. On weekend mornings, the children run and bounce balls, which disturb the neighbor, setting in motion a series of interactions. There are negotiations, compromises, agreements and violations which are discussed--in public and private--amongst each other, as well as with their friends. In the big-picture, The Evolution of Knowledge by Niccolo Tucci is a statement on Fascism, changing morays, discipline of children and post-World War II renewal. In the small-picture, the short story is framed within the context of an ordinary dispute between neighbors that is told with charm and simplicity. In either sense, it draws upon the fact that good fences make good neighbors. In that light, I am reminded of Frost’s poem: ‘Mending Wall’.
