BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN SHORT STORY REVIEW - The novella that became an award winning film, by a literary vanguard, was originally published in The New Yorker in 1997. It was later included in her collection entitled Close Range: Wyoming Stories in 1999. Annie Proulx has won just about every major writing prize, her story became an Oscar winning film and also strangely enough, an opera. Brokeback Mountain captured the imagination of readers and film viewers alike. Fan fiction (and even more risqué fare) abound on the interwebs. I think the reason is Proulx employs narrative distance allowing readers to insert themselves onto the page. Two men unite amidst idyllic mountain beauty, Brokeback Mountain itself, becomes a symbol of their love. Their isolation against the rustic Wyoming backdrop pushes them closer together and the attraction is compelling. But, it’s not a story with a happy ending. Proulx has herself said she wishes she’d never written the story. I look at it another way, she should be flattered. She’s created something so powerful that readers can’t help but to inject themselves into the world of Brokeback Mountain.

METROPOLIS

METROPOLIS - The revolutionary silent film, released in the Weimar era of 1927, represents a beautiful Utopian world above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers. Directed by Fritz Lang, the film is highly regarded as a pioneer of the genre. Its influence has left an indelible mark on popular culture-- Madonna, Queen, Haddaway, Janelle Monáe, Lady Gaga--that continues to this day and on into the future. A bleak future, such as the one depicted in Metropolis? Only time will tell.

HORROR 2016

HORROR 2016 - It’s too soon to tell yet, however the year 2016 shows promise for horror films. Still, it’s irritating that Hollywood recycles the same titles, over and over again. Here’s my short list of films (possibly) worth watching.

KEPPLER MEGASTRUCTURE DISCOVERY?

KEPPLER MEGASTRUCTURE DISCOVERY? - Kepler Telescope has identified curious dips in light in a distant star under observation. It was speculated to be an alien megastructure, but the story gets stranger still. Old images dating back to the 1890s show it was once noticeably brighter than it is today. This makes the theory of comet storms unlikely due to the steady predictable pattern. A theory surfaced about a partially collapsed megastructure constructed by a very advanced civilization. A Dyson Sphere, a hypothetical megastructure, is a solar collector which encompasses a star to harness its power. Such ideas are the stuff of science fiction legend. An energy hungry alien society harnessing star power to fuel its long-term survival. Every great story begins with ‘what if?’ … could humans have a distant alien neighbor in our cosmic neighborhood? I have no idea. 

1915 PAN PACIFIC

1915 PAN PACIFIC - All aboard! An exhibit, titled 1915 Pan Pacific Exposition, can be seen until April 2016 at the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. The display is a miniature railroad that passes through iconic imagery of San Francisco’s yesteryear. The Pan Pacific was a World Fair held along the north shore, to showcase reconstruction after the devastation incurred by the 1906 earthquake. If you’re a regular visitor to my blog check out pics from past conservatory exhibits including Chomp, Playland, Boomtown and Butterflies. Model trains wind their way through plants and recreations; such as the Tower of Jewels and Palace of Fine Arts; along with other features/ memorabilia. SIDE NOTE - You can visit buildings from the exposition that still stand in the city today such as the Palace of Fine Arts and Civic Auditorium. Another curious fact is the Legion of Honor is a replica of the French Pavilion featured in the Pan Pacific Exposition. If you’ve never been, a trip to the Conservatory of Flowers is worthwhile; to take a trip into the city’s colorful past.
