CASINO ROYALE
CASINO ROYALE - The first
book in a series, which spawned a franchise, is Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale.
James Bond, secret agent 007, targets a communist paymaster, LeChiffre, under
the Soviet murder organization named SMERSH. A game of baccarat, white hot
lovers, a dapper dashing gentleman, a femme fatale, some brutish torture and a
double crossing twist ending … rise and fall in this suspenseful spy thriller.
The introduction and resolution occur outside the casino; otherwise the
characters inhabit a world of sumptuous elegance amidst lurking danger in
Royale-les-Eaux. The casino is set in a fictional seaside resort off the coast
and beaches of Brittany. Fleming’s vivid descriptions are effortless, no doubt
firmly rooted in the years he spent as a foreign correspondent in Europe. His
expert command of French and English references are admirable, leaps and bounds
above mediocre fare of the spy/ thriller idiom.

NEW RELIGION - In a magical place during a time not long ago, there was once a garden on an island for radical faeries, new bohemians and flower children. San Francisco, which has become a walled fortress, were the tech industry elite inhabit luxury condos and glide about in chauffeured limousines. These assholes spend fistfuls of green, as their eyes sparkle with greedy lust. A New Religion, colorless graven images that promise immortality, fame and wealth beyond all imagination. What's scattered in fragments underneath your feet, the leavings of people of color and an entire counter culture, in a place once known as mecca? Colorless, sterile, elitist, boring, privileged surround you. How did we get to today? Is it too far gone? Can we get them out? Return to the strange. Reject them, the heretic idols of the New Religion.

THE MALTESE FALCON - In his best known book, Dashiell Hammett pens the stylish Sam Spade, protagonist of The Maltese Falcon. He’s tough enough to stand up to thugs or the police. He smells trouble when a buxom dame breezes into his office. Soon enough, his entire world will be turned upside down. Hammett wrote about detectives because he had been employed as one after responding to a vague classified ad. He had a notoriously short writing career, publishing four novels and all of his short stories within nine years. His poor health, struggle with alcoholism and community party membership led to his decline and eventual imprisonment in McCarthy era hysteria. In the final years of his life, he was hounded by the IRS for back taxes, dying penniless.

JOURNEY TO MARS
JOURNEY TO MARS - Interplanetary space travel has been the
vision of science fiction prophets for over a century. Consider the iconic
silent film, directed by Georges Méliès entitled Le Voyage dans la Lune (1902).
It was based on From the Earth to the Moon written by Jules Verne. But, NASA’s
first foray onto another planet, Apollo 11 in 1969, was 46 years ago. It’s been
a long time since, and the world has transformed dramatically in the interim.
What’s NASA planning now, you might ask? Well, they have plans for us, big plans.
The space agency will send humans to an asteroid by 2025 and to Mars by 2030.
The International Space Station, Mars rovers, robotic asteroid missions and
transmission of cargo to Mars are all considered incremental steps. Using the
Orion spacecraft in 2020, astronauts will capture an asteroid, place it in moon
orbit and explore around it, eventually returning to Earth with samples. So,
Mars is next, and beyond that … who knows? If you're a regular visitor to my
blog you already know I’m fascinated by a simple question. What if? Impossible
to answer.
