GOODBYE CARL? - Carl became friends with Sophia, survival camping alongside Lori (his mom) and Shane. After the walker outbreak, they all thought Carl’s father was dead. Until Lori and Rick reunite and together lead the other survivors to the CDC, Herschel’s farm, Woodbury, the prison, Terminus and Alexandria. Shane, Lori, Sophia, Beth and many others die off along the way. Later, little boy Carl transforms into One-Eye-Carl, when a stray bullet half blinds him while battling walkers. Last season ends with a bite by either a Whisperer or a walker? Right now, conspiracy theorists contend Rick passed his superhero invincibility onto his son. So, do you think Carl lives or dies? I have no idea. But you better get ready to say goodbye. Stay tuned.

EUROPA CLIPPER

Europa Clipper - Europa is an icy moon that orbits Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. The Galileo space probe confirmed the moon has a thin atmosphere, is covered by thick ice and flexes tidally. The surface is covered with reddish-brown hatch marks, possibly left behind by irradiated salt water deposits. The Hubble telescope found water vapor shooting sixty miles in height, prompting the theory of a subsurface ocean on this strange world. The USA has planned a new mission of discovery, the Europa Clipper, named for high seas ship voyages in the not so distant past. For the first time, a space probe might discover life outside Earth. Still in the planning stages, the radiation-tolerant spacecraft will use Jupiter’s gravity to slingshot by the moon, 45 revolutions within 16 miles of the surface. Passing through the water above the surface will allow analysis of the chemical makeup but avoids the need to drill through ice layers. NASA is sending instruments aboard including cameras, spectrometers, radar, magnetometer, thermometer and instruments to detect atmospheric water and particles. Every great story starts the same way. What if? Could unimaginable creatures inhabit this familiar yet so alien underwater world? Truly, this is a new age of exploration.

HP LOVECRAFT

HP LOVECRAFT - HP (Howard Phillips) Lovecraft was born to a lunatic father and fragile mother in Providence RI where many of his tales are set. His grandfather, a successful businessman, died. Resulting in the family losing their prestigious home. Meanwhile Lovecraft himself had a nervous breakdown but was also cursed with poor physical health. Both circumstances led to his failure to obtain a high school diploma, leaving Brown no longer an option. He toyed with amateur journalism and published his first short story, The Alchemist, in 1916. His mother became institutionalized, confined to the same mental hospital as his father, HPL was desperate.  Lovecraft married and shortly thereafter his wife lost her business. He lived in Brooklyn NY but was robbed and returned to Providence. Lacking conventional skills, his job prospects diminished, and he struggled to make it as a working writer. The period from 1919 to 1920, Lovecraft's Dream Cycle, inspired such works as The White Ship, The Cats of Ulthar, Nyarlathotep and The Nameless City. The first story in the Cthulhu Mythos. He placed short stories in pulps, like Weird Tales almost exclusively, in the Twenties and Thirties. He declined Weird Tales’s offer of an editor position. He was fully capable of writing commercially viable stories (The Dunwich Horror) which the Weird Tales editor wanted but pursued work he couldn’t sell for profit. He left some unsubmitted (The Shadow Over Innsmouth), didn’t respond to a novel query simply because his notes weren’t typed up into submission format (The Case of Charles Dexter Ward) and other bungled efforts. Long separated, he agreed to divorce with his wife, but when he said he signed the decree, he actually had not. His inheritance dwindled until he was nearly broke so he wouldn’t eat to continue sending letters. Cancer and chronic pain plagued him until his death in 1937, killed by poverty at the very young age of 46. His work is rooted in the themes of science, the occult, decayed antiques, gothic architecture, churches and graveyards, Anglophilia, gods and monsters. His posthumous collections became best sellers but his writing was virtually unknown in his lifetime.

THE WRITE PLATFORM

THE WRITE PLATFORM – With the diminishing influence of the Big 5, up against almighty Amazon, authors need platforms. Why is that, you might ask? I’m a writer. Do I really need to bother with publicity? Yes. Do both, write material and engage in marketing. Some of these are costly, and some are free, so start somewhere based on your resources. See below for tips and highlights. 

Blog - This is the most important aspect. Write on a regular (weekly or monthly) schedule, since you’re going for repeat visitors, not the one time click. Email - Create a footer signature with all your platform links. Start collecting other’s emails to send out info when new releases come out. Every message you send should share your platform information. Website - Think of it as a landing page to house your platform links. Decide whether to use your real name or penname. Make sure the website address isn’t overly complicated. Newsletter - Add a newsletter signup to your blog. Whatever you do, don’t spam your list. Keep it brief, interesting and valuable in terms of the information presented. Social Media - Be interesting and add value. Your Facebook should link to your Twitter which should link back to your Pinterest and so on.  Giveaways - Consider handing out a freebie to increase exposure or grow your list. Some writers have perfected the first-one-is-free serial. Local events - Go to book signings, writers groups, book stores, interview panels, book readings, conferences, book fairs, etc. Multimedia - Each story should have a book trailer available to spread the message about your work. Familiarize yourself with video, image and sound editing software. Handselling – Ask your local bookstore if they will sell your book? Oftentimes they will accept a few of them and send you a commission. Tell them you’re a local writer! Online - Groups, clubs and associations support writers for free or for a price.  Facebook alone has hundreds of groups dedicated to writer’s support. Branding – Make your selections with uniformity--fonts, cover images, topics and themes--with a critical eye. Style is crucial in a visual medium and your customer should instantly know what you’re all about. Author page - Amazon offers a central place for all of your books and reposting of all your blog posts. Interviews - Once you’ve established credibility as a writer, ask about appearances on podcasts and radio shows. 

A lot of platforms are started and abandoned. What’s the point of that? Now it’s time to get busy with your writing platform.
